Custom Built-In Cabinetry
Some of our favorite projects begin with a part of the room that just does not work. Maybe a structural column is in the way, a pantry door breaks up the cabinetry, or an empty room needs to become something completely different.
That is where custom work makes a real difference. We design around the room, the architecture, and how the space will actually be used. In the projects below, you will see a pantry hidden behind a cabinet door, a freezer panel designed around an original column, and a complete golf simulator we built inside our Boise showroom. We handled the simulator itself along with the technology, control center, illuminated bookcases, and protective curtains built neatly into the space.
Every project started with a different idea or challenge. Each one required a solution made specifically for that room.
This 1920s Coral Gables home had a structural column directly beside the integrated Sub-Zero freezer. The architect’s original plan called for two large fillers on either side of the appliance. That approach would have hidden the column, but it also would have created a lot of dead space and made the cabinetry feel unnecessarily wide.
One advantage of integrated refrigerators and freezers is the flexibility of the custom door panels. Extending a panel vertically to align with the surrounding cabinetry is fairly common. Extending one past the left or right side of an appliance is much less common.
We spent three to four hours on the phone with Sub-Zero discussing exactly how far we could extend the freezer panel while maintaining the proper door movement and appliance clearances. Together, we found a way to extend the panel beyond the side of the freezer so it covers the structural column when the door is closed.
The photo shows how the solution works. You only see the column when you open the freezer. Once closed, the extended panel conceals it and blends into the surrounding custom cabinetry. This solution preserved the home’s original structure, reduced wasted space, and created a cleaner finished kitchen.

A Hidden Walk-In Pantry Behind the Cabinetry
This 1926 Coral Gables home had a walk-in pantry tucked beneath the staircase, a layout often found in homes from that period. The pantry was useful, but a standard doorway in the middle of the kitchen would have interrupted the cabinetry and broken up the entire wall.
Instead, we concealed the pantry entrance behind what appears to be a tall pantry cabinet. When the door is closed, it aligns with the surrounding custom cabinetry and creates one continuous, uninterrupted row. Open it, and the door leads into the original walk-in pantry beneath the stairs.
This hidden pantry door allowed us to preserve a useful part of the historic home while giving the renovated kitchen a cleaner and more intentional layout. It looks like part of the cabinetry because it was designed and built as part of the cabinetry.

A Custom Built-In Golf Simulator in Boise
We built this golf simulator inside our Boise showroom to show how custom cabinetry can shape an entire room. It combines two different tracking systems: a Foresight launch monitor runs the simulator, while an MLM2PRO records video of each swing. A control center on the right wall includes an iPad for reviewing swing data and video without leaving the hitting area.
We built the control center in quarter-sawn white oak and book-matched the grain across the panels. It is a small detail, but it turns a group of screens and equipment into a finished part of the room. The quarter-sawn white oak bookcases beside the simulator screen include lighting beneath each shelf, giving the display a warm glow without distracting from the screen.
We also built protective curtains into the room. They can cover the nearby walls and bookcases while someone is playing, protecting the cabinetry from an occasional stray golf ball. When the simulator is not in use, the curtains stay out of the way and the space still feels like a finished showroom.
Every part of the golf simulator, from the technology and swing-analysis station to the illuminated bookcases and protective curtains, was planned as one complete custom built-in.
